Students who wouldn't typically have access to STEM related activities were given the opportunity to experience BEST and interact with a robot. We wanted to make younger students aware of the problem of ocean pollution and how they can get involved in local clean up efforts. We also want them to be inspired to become leaders in STEM careers and ocean sustainability. Our outreach at ECA is also a recruiting mechanism. We will lose 17% of our team to graduation next year. The classes at ECA were comprised of homeschool students in grades 1-5 and are therefore prospective members for years to come.
